“Slug Slut” is part of a series of works that address the sexualization of bodies read as female. Slut shaming refers to the act of condemning or discriminating against a person based on their actual or perceived sexual behavior, sexual preferences, clothing, or appearance. It devalues people who are perceived as sexually promiscuous or who claim sexual autonomy. Individuals read as female are particularly affected by slut shaming. Closely linked to this form of degradation is victim blaming, in which victims of sexual violence are held responsible for their experiences. A widespread narrative, for example, suggests that individuals provoke rape through “provocative” clothing, their behavior, or carelessness, such as intoxication with alcohol. Slut shaming is a component of rape culture, in which sexual violence is trivialized, ignored, or even tolerated.
